“If we make it to the final, the 1:6 won’t matter”

1/6
Lost: Captain Fabian Frei and his FCB colleagues have a hard time with St. Gallen (striker Latte Lath, right).

The man made 342 of his 406 Super League appearances for FCB, more than anyone else. But six goals against? Captain Fabian Frei (34) has only experienced this once in his entire life in Basel. But the legendary 1: 7 in Bern 2018 against YB was in any case the gigantic duel.

But this time Basel is confused by FC St. Gallen, who were in crisis after eleven competitive games without a win and almost still in the relegation battle. A 1:6 pack, three days after the fairy tale at Fiorentina and four days before the biggest game in years, the second leg in the Conference League semi-finals in the sold-out Joggeli.

Free with a comeback after a two month break

Frei knows that FCB has been struggling all season to get going in a league match after a European Cup appointment. But he says after the debacle in St. Gallen: “I understand there is a discrepancy on this point. But this time it was different than usual, it is inexplicable to me.”

The total failure of Basel in the Kybunpark. Were nine changes in the starting line-up too much? Frei says, “Yes. But not many of those who played on Thursday were on the field today. That’s why I don’t use fatigue as an excuse.”

A 1:6 in the comeback. Frei could hardly have imagined a more unsuccessful return after his two-month hiatus due to a hernia.

“Understandably, the focus is different”

But Frei also says clearly: in the championship game, which is between the two semifinals, simply going back to everyday life is unrealistic. «Without the European Cup, a different team would have been on the field today. I can understand very well that the coach puts the focus a bit on Thursday.”

The fans who are in the host sector in St. Gallen see it that way too. After the game, they celebrate their favourites. Despite the 1:6. But in view of Fiorentina’s goal, when FCB can make great history with the first European Cup final entry from a Swiss club.

Frei also sees it this way: “If we make it to the final, we don’t care about the 1: 6. Even if such a result is of course a Seich.”
