We need characters like Taulant Xhaka!

Swiss football would be poorer without him: Taulant Xhaka.

Where would Swiss football be without the Xhaka family? Definitely poorer in football class. But above all, there is less turbulence, scandals and outbreaks. When the two volcanoes from the knee of the Rhine spew fire and ash again, the football nation trembles.

Recently it was the eldest who forgot to take a deep breath. And after he panicked in the game against FCZ, he was shot down by the media shortage. And now on an apology tour.

Despite all the outrage, every team needs an aggressive leader. One that also unwrapped the two-handed sword in slack stages. Someone who, with the power of his emotionality and toughness, can shake up and carry a team along. Who chases the playful block and lethargy from the field. One like Taulant Xhaka.

Of course: Xhaka shot through and is rightly punished. But did he kick someone? Has he broken bones, shredded ligaments and tendons? Has he ruined a colleague’s career as others have? He does not have. Even though his attack is, of course, to be condemned.

We want to type, we want characters. With rough edges, with a clear opinion. Not just in sports. General. Recently, coaches and players have also been sharply criticized for not giving clichéd stock answers after the game, but clearly expressing their displeasure. Who forgot their media training and spoke plain language.

More of that! We don’t just want athletic choirboys!

It is not only in sports that people are no longer primarily measured by their actions and their consequences. But on gestures, on clumsy statements, on verbal blunders. Then we will be on site very quickly and raise the warning finger. Then suddenly we have a lot of impeccable moralists who always seem to behave correctly in all situations.

Then Hinz and Kunz suddenly become tin soldiers of good taste. Moralizing guardians of political correctness. Double standards and hypocrisy included.

Xhaka’s actions should not be seen in this context and these rules are not intended as an advocacy for the league’s hotspur. But one should not break the baton over him. Keeping the courage and overview on the cozy sofa is not an art. But in the heat of the moment, in this tough football world where provocation and nonsense are the order of the day, it’s hard to always be a role model.

And the fans should also realize something: without real boys with rough edges, without figures like Taulant Xhaka, the sport will also become poorer.
