Oleksandra Korashvili can pursue her passion again.

In two ITF tournaments, Oleksandra Korashvili (27) entered the tennis stage for the first time since 2019 in recent weeks. Even though she failed early (2nd qualifying round and sixteenth finals), participation was like a victory for her. “I am the first athlete to return to a professional level after a bone marrow donation,” the Ukrainian tells the blog “Behind the Racquet”.

In the summer of 2020, she suddenly had to deal with health problems. During the training she got tired quickly and her heart rate went up considerably. There were also symptoms such as headache, shortness of breath, fatigue and loss of appetite.

After numerous tests, the diagnosis followed: leukemia. Only a bone marrow transplant could help her. “It was my only chance to get healthy again,” she says. “So I agreed without a doubt.”

First sick, then war

The transplant took place in January 2021 after previous chemotherapy. As a result, Korashvili’s immune system was weakened. She was prone to viruses and infections, so she avoided large crowds. After twelve months, rehabilitation was complete and she was able to return to her normal life. But this should not be so normal for now.

On February 24, they were awakened by explosions, the war in Ukraine broke out. “I spent six days in the bomb shelter,” Korashvili describes the time before she decided to flee to Austria, “to save my life a second time.”

“It was my only chance to become a healthy person again, so I agreed without hesitation.”Oleksandra Korashvili, tennis player

Six months later, she returned home and started working on her comeback. Her tennis record would not be complete with three ITF tournament wins and a doubles final loss at the 2013 Australian Open Junior Women’s Tournament.

“Be thankful for everything”

Earlier this year, Korashvili celebrated the second anniversary of her bone marrow transplant. On that occasion, she wrote on Instagram: “The past two years have taught me not to take anything for granted and to be thankful for everything you have.”

Therefore, it is also a privilege for Korashvili to be able to get back on the field and participate in tournaments. It is hoped that this will continue for a long time to come. (bir)
