Relegation contenders Leeds and Champions League-aspiring Newcastle broke up 2-2 in a heated match. There’s a stoppage time scene to talk about when Newcastle coach Eddie Howe (45) is approached by a Leeds fan.
The last three or four minutes walk. Newcastle are about to circle a dangerous free-kick in the middle when a home supporter approaches the coach, shoves and shouts at him and is taken away by security forces.
Howe seems thoughtful after the incident. He focused on the game and was completely surprised. “It was the last thing I expected. Not sure if he pushed me. He confronted me and said something I don’t want to repeat,” he describes the scene. “Safety is the most important thing and we have to pay attention to that.” Howe demands that the stadium’s security measures be rechecked so that such scenes do not repeat.
The perpetrator has been banned from the stadium for life and charged with assault. The man has been released on bail and will appear in court in July. (dti)
