The third Swiss goalkeeper at the World Cup in Riga is called Joren Van Pottelberghe (25), reports the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation.
Naticoach Patrick Fischer has nominated the goalkeeper of EHC Biel for the World Cup selection after Akira Schmid was not released for the World Cup in Riga due to an injury from the New Jersey Devils.
The Emmentaler, who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Friday, was surprised in the first round of the playoffs against the New York Rangers when his turn came surprisingly and was very strong (95.1 percent defense percentage). Teammate Erik Haula called him “Schmido the torpedo” and said, “I’m so happy for him. He works hard and is calm as a cucumber.”
The playoff fairytale ended in the quarterfinals. Schmid and his Devils failed the Carolina Hurricanes. Schmid was substituted in the first two games and only came back in the fifth and final game.
Devils captain Nico Hischier and defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler have announced that they will strengthen the Latvian national team. With Timo Meier it was clear that he would not come to the World Cup because his contract expired.
Van Pottelberghe was number two behind Finn Harri Säteri in the play-offs with vice-champions Biel, but made three appearances and impressed with strong performances. Thanks to the saves of Zug, who was injured for most of the season, the Seelanders won one game each in Zurich and Geneva. (sr)
