Carlos Alcaraz has successfully started the ATP 1000 tournament in Rome. After a bye in round 1, the Spaniard defeated his compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas (ATP 72) 6: 4, 6: 1 in the 2nd round and is now number 1 in men’s tennis again.
Alcaraz needed almost an hour and a half for his 20th victory in the 21st game on clay this year. The 20-year-old, who has just won the tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid, will make his first serve in Rome, where he will be the big challenger to six-time winner and defending champion Novak Djokovic. It is the first time this year that the two stars compete in the same tournament. A meeting is only possible in the final on May 21, a week before the start of the French Open.
Alcaraz arrives in Paris as number 1 in the world ranking. Because he already passed Djokovic in the ATP ranking when he showed up in Rome. The Serb has to defend 1000 points in the Italian capital, Alcaraz was missing last year. (NSA/SDA)
