Andreas Leknessund crosses the finish line a little late, but remains the leader.

Andreas Leknessund remains in pink for another day in the Giro d’Italia. The Norwegian comes under pressure in the 8th stage, but can just defend the leader’s jersey when the Irishman Ben Healy drops out.

Healy wins the 207km stage from Terni to Fossombrone after a solo run of nearly 50km. The 22-year-old classics specialist from Ireland, only beaten a month ago by high flyer Tadej Pogacar in the Gold Race, crosses the finish line 1:49 minutes ahead of his former flight mates and thus celebrates the biggest victory of his young career.

Behind them, the contenders for the overall victory exchange blows. Primoz Roglic leaves the best impression. The Slovenian attacks on the final climb of the day and puts pressure on his great rival, world champion Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian shows unusual weaknesses on the mountain and loses 14 seconds to Roglic at the finish.

Evenepoel and Roglic increased the pressure

Andreas Leknessund is still in the lead in the general classification, who, somewhat surprisingly, once again successfully defended the leader’s jersey captured on Tuesday. At the finish, the Norwegian still has an eight second lead over Evenepoel, Roglic follows another 30 seconds in third place overall.

Evenepoel and Roglic will also be in the picture on Sunday in the 35 km time trial to Cesena. Stefan Küng would also like to say something about the victory of the day. The World Cup runner-up from Thurgau finished 5th in the opening time trial a week ago.

After the test against the clock, the first rest day of this year’s Tour of Italy will follow on Monday. (SDA)
