The final course of the ESAF 2022 in Pratteln could hardly be surpassed in terms of excitement. Several times Wicki had to free herself from an emergency.

He’s one of the bad guys. And since last summer, even a non-swinger knows the name of Matthias Aeschbacher (31). In the last round at the federal in Pratteln, the Emmental showed a heroic fight against Joel Wicki (26). Berner forced Luzern to the ground six times. Wicki managed to free himself six times. In the end Aeschbacher ended up with his back in the sawdust, Wicki secured royal oak leaves.

This defeat is now almost nine months ago. The sporting aspect has been incorporated and the demand from the media has also decreased somewhat, according to Aeschbacher: «Every three years, the media questions drive the ESAF crazy. This winter was certainly busier than before. But that is part of it.”

A new company

Aeschbacher’s environment also noticed that his popularity increased with the last course participation. Madlen, the wife of Matthias Aeschbacher, works together with his sister-in-law in a fan shop. The first photo shoots for the fan articles took place recently. The site will be online soon. So is the mason still going in the fashion world? “No absolutely not! I said to Madlen – if I’m not involved, you women can do whatever you want,” says the 13-time winner of the Wreath Festival with a laugh. But he wants to take a look at the end products before they end up in the online shop. “At least it has my name on it.”

Above all, the Emmentaler wants to please his fans with the products. “Apparently there are a few people who think I’m pretty good and enjoy such fan articles,” Aeschbacher says modestly. He doesn’t want to make money with it. Otherwise, the tax return would suddenly become even more complicated.

Defense of the mission title

The professional does not have much time to arrange things anyway. In addition to his job as a bricklayer and foreman and his duties as a father to son Nino (2), the focus is now entirely on his home festival, the Emmental Wrestling Festival in Bowil. Aeschbacher is the defending champion. And has a lot to make up for.

The topper from Bern did not start the season satisfactorily. At the Bern-Jurassic two weeks ago, he had to admit defeat to his young ally Adrian Walther (21) in the final round. It was “not a good performance,” says the Swiss. His demands are higher. Especially when he swings for his own audience, like on Sunday. For Matthias Aeschbacher there is only one goal: to win the festival.
