After no fewer than 130 appearances for the Belgian national team, Axel Witsel (34) announces his retirement. The former Dortmunder, who is currently under contract with Atletico Madrid, makes this known on Twitter.
“It was with great emotion that I decided to retire from international football. I have always been proud to represent my country for the past 15 years.” Now the 34-year-old midfielder wants to spend more time with his family and even more time with his club.
Witsel represented Belgium at three World Cups and two European Championships, scoring 12 goals in 130 matches. Only one has appeared more often for the “Red Devils” than him. Central defender Jan Vertonghen played 147 games for Belgium. (par)
