Roman Kostomarow (46) was in mortal danger for months. In January, the 2006 Olympic champion contracted pneumonia from a corona infection that seemed manageable. After that, his health continued to deteriorate – due to blood poisoning and tissue death, his feet and parts of his hands had to be amputated to save his life. A cerebral haemorrhage, two strokes and an artificial coma followed.
The star’s whereabouts are now up for debate. According to Russian media, Kostomarov was secretly shipped abroad during his treatment. As the Russian portal “mk.ru” wants to know, at the end of April he left his hospital in Kommunarka (Moscow district) for Germany or Israel. Experts should make special prostheses there.
But Oksana Domnina (38), Kostomarov’s wife, vehemently denies the rumors. She claims that her husband is still in his home country and is being treated there. It is quite possible that Domnina wants to cover up the high costs of the treatment. “If an athlete’s prostheses are made abroad, it will cost his family hundreds of millions of rubles,” said a Russian traumatologist.
In addition, the Russian health care system wants to credit the former figure skater’s miraculous recovery. But according to the Russian website kp.ru, German specialists flew to Moscow at an early stage of treatment to help and advise.
Kostomarow has now regained consciousness and is trying to make his way back to life. But his patience is still needed. Because his wounds have not all healed yet and still need to be treated with medication, the prostheses that have already been made cannot yet be placed.
On his Instagram account, the Russian turned to the public for the first time since his ordeal began, thanking everyone who cared for or prayed for him. “To everyone who believed that I would make it through this most difficult situation life has to throw at me. There are still many difficulties ahead of me, but I hope that I will overcome them all.”
When he wakes up from the artificial coma in mid-March, he has to relearn everyday things like chewing and eating. Kostomarov thanks the “doctors who brought me back from the other world”, once again making it clear how close he was to death. So now waiting for the prosthetics. He ends his message with the words “I still have a lot of hard work ahead of me.” (dti)
