At YB? No chance against the competition! At GC? Failed too! After two attempts in the Super League, Haris Tabakovic is trying his luck abroad: in 2017 he took the leap to the footballing provincial country of Hungary – and sees himself confirmed in the special choice of employer: 13 goals in 25 games are a strong record at the first foreign channel.
But what the 28-year-old Grenchner is really capable of, he will only show this season. Tabakovic has meanwhile moved on to Austria and really exploded there. In the 2021/22 season he scored 27 times in 23 games – but at that time it was still in the 2nd Bundesliga for Lustenau. His reward was a move to Austria Wien in the top division.
After a difficult start, things have been going well in the Austrian capital, since the beginning of the year to be precise: he has since scored twelve times in eleven league matches for Austria Wien. More than one goal per game – an excellent rate! And one that makes him statistically the best Swiss striker in a top league during this period. Embolo? Seferovic? Okay? They can all pack, not even close to the height of 1.94 meters and the accompanying quota! Okafor, who plays in the same league as Tabakovic with Salzburg, has yet to score this year.
The Swiss goalscorers in the Super League cannot match Tabakovic’s quota either. Most likely Cedric Itten from Master YB. But he also needs more than one game to score on average (13 goals in 15 games). Guillemenot from FC St. Gallen, Amdouni and Zeqiri from FC Basel also score regularly, but not on the meter like Tabakovic.
On “heute.at” he explains why, after a difficult first half of the year with the change of coach (Michael Wimmer for Manfred Schmid) during the winter break, things suddenly go well in Vienna: “It was just right from the start with the new coaching team, “It gives me confidence. And physically I feel great, the preparation was great. When you start well, confidence comes. The team makes it easy for me too. A lot of balls are flanked in the penalty area, that’s where I have my strengths.”
By the way: even if comparisons are more of a gimmick due to the sportingly large difference in level between the leagues, Tabakovic has even trumped the greats of world football since the beginning of the year. Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, PSG’s Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski all score less reliably than Tabakovic in the league. When asked, he says: “It makes me proud to see myself at the top of the stats with all these names,” the former YB and GC player admits. “But of course you have to keep the ball flat. I play in a much smaller league. And the others score 40, 50 goals a season.” (whose)
