YB 1959: Goalscorer Geni Meier is celebrated by the Bernese fans after the 1-0 victory in the first leg.

Anyone who was in Wankdorf in Bern on April 15, 1959 will remember this momentous day for the rest of their lives. The official number of spectators was given as 60,000, but eyewitnesses spoke of a maximum of 64,000, because anyone who paid five francs was allowed in. It doesn’t matter if there was still room.

What the spectators then saw was a beautiful moment in Swiss football. YB won 1-0, but the win could have been much bigger. The Bernese hit the crossbar twice, one goal was disallowed – for whatever reason – and the referee overlooked a clear foul by a Bernese in the penalty area.

The air was out in the second leg. Reims won 3-0 and the Bernese European Cup fairy tale came to an abrupt end.

Zurich: 1964 European Cup of National Champions

Even though the two games against the great Real Madrid are almost 60 years ago, Bruno Brizzi still thinks back on it regularly. “My late wife used to cut out every newspaper article and put it in albums. I like to flip through these from time to time and wallow in the memories,” says the 89-year-old.

Brizzi was not only there then, he also scored Zurich’s only goal. “It was a sensation and a unique experience that we made it to the semi-finals. We little Swiss got to play against superstars like Di Stefano or Puska. I’m still grateful for that to this day.”

Brizzi is particularly proud of one memory. After the game, he obtained a signed photo of the legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas. His wife also neatly filed this signature in the albums at the time.

Zurich: 1977 European Cup of National Champions

Unthinkable today, but then normal: after three victory rounds, FCZ was already in the semi-finals, where they met Liverpool. Pius Fischbach remembers the quarterfinal match away at Dynamo Dresden. “We then held two meetings, one in a public area and one in a small room, as the Stasi was listening in at the time.”

When the 75-year-old thinks of the semi-final against Liverpool, the second leg at the legendary Anfield Road comes to mind first and foremost. “When ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was played, it was very impressive. But that didn’t intimidate me, it motivated me.”

Nevertheless, the FCZ had no chance and lost 0:3. But Fischbach says, “It was a huge experience and I’m still asked about it on a regular basis.”

Final standings: UEFA Cup 1978

“It’s unbelievable what happened then in Bastia in Corsica,” says Roger Wehrli today, recalling the morning of the second stage. “We went for a walk around 11 am and passed the stadium. It was great, the stadium was already full.”

Wat Wehrli and Co. later experienced when they arrived is unimaginable today. “While we were warming up, there were real Güggel and sheep on the field, all painted blue and white.”

Little would be missing and GC would have been the first Swiss team to reach a European Cup final. But due to the away goals rule, the Zurich team was out of luck. “It was still impressive. Also for our women, who we were allowed to take with us for the first time.”

Basel: Europa League 2013

The highlight of the 2012/13 Basel European Cup campaign was clearly the quarter-final against Tottenham. It was 2-2 in both the first and second leg. So a penalty shootout followed. With the better ending for red-blue.

Chelsea again met an English team in the semi-finals. But in the second leg at Stamford Bridge, Basel’s miracle failed to get off the ground. FCB were eliminated by the eventual winners of the Europa League with an aggregate score of 2:5.
