It is a novelty in modern mountain biking. The cross-country season starts with a Swiss woman as the reigning overall World Cup winner, whose name is not Jolanda Neff (30). It is Nidwaldnerin Alessandra Keller (27), who had a dream year in 2022 and will start this weekend in the Czech Republic as number 1 in the world.

Will Olympic champion Neff 2023 regain her status as the best Swiss World Cup? The St. Gallen confidently answers this question, saying, “I don’t feel like much has changed.”

The justification of the multiple world and European champion and three-time World Cup winner: «Last year I was the best Swiss at the European Championships and at the World Cup. I missed two races in the World Cup due to illness. And when I was there, it was pretty even.” Neff versus Keller – the invisible Swiss duel in the World Cup. Because they both together ensure that you don’t pay special attention to each other.

Neff and the desire for the shape of her dream years

The Olympic champion is focusing on the World Cup in August this season, but also wants to participate in the World Cup again. Last year she won a World Cup competition in Canada for the first time in four years.

Neff: “I want to build on that. But I feel like my body has potential for more. I want to be the Jolanda of 2018 again.” Even at the Olympic victory in 2021, she didn’t feel as good as at the season finale in La Bresse in 2018. Neff and the longing for the dream years between 2014 and 2018, when in five years she won the general classification three times in that time No female motorcyclist was as young as Neff at the time.

Is the competition with Keller and Co. only gotten better since then? Neff strongly disagrees. “My impression is that I have gotten worse and the level is not higher. I want to go back to where I was.” She mainly means consistency over a whole year. Because the St. Gallen native has always been fast in individual races since 2018. A good condition for the World Championships in Glasgow, where Neff is aiming for her second individual gold: “This is my race of the year.”
