Dane Pedersen wins stage 6 of the Giro d’Italia

Denmark’s Mads Pedersen wins stage six of the 162km Giro d’Italia, which starts and finishes in Naples, ahead of Italy’s Jonathan Milan and Germany’s Pascal Ackermann.

The expectation was that there would be a winner after a sprint on Thursday. However, the Italian Alessandro De Marchi and the Australian Simon Clarke, who rode away with three other riders shortly after the start, were only overtaken just under 400 m before the finish.

For Pedersen it is the first victory in the Giro. He has now won all three major national tours at least once. In 2022, the 2019 world champion triumphed in a stage of the Tour de France and in the Vuelta he crossed the finish line three times. The 27-year-old Pedersen rides for the Trek-Segafredo team, with Swiss Grégory Rast as sports director.

First mountain finish on Friday

Norwegian Andreas Leknessund continues to lead the overall standings with a lead of 28 seconds over current world champion and top favorite Remco Evenepoel of Belgium. The Slovenian Olympic time trial champion Primoz Roglic and the British ex-Tour winner Geraint Thomas escaped unscathed – both suffered a defect a few kilometers from the finish.

There should be movement in the general classification on Friday, because then the riders will face the first mountain finish of this year’s Giro. The finish in Gran Sasso d’Italia is at an altitude of 2130 m. Until then, 218 km will be covered. (SDA/dti)
