Borer defends himself against hate comments

Unfortunately, the SRF sports moderator is used to Olivier Borer (40) being regularly insulted via email and on social media. But now he’s considering taking legal action against a particularly nasty hate comment.

What happened? Last fall, he and his husband became parents for the first time. Naël Yunus was born in the US through a surrogate mother. Even then it angered some people. “Nature has arranged that it takes a man and a woman to bring a child into the world,” read one of the comments. And another wrote: “Now there was probably a child on the shopping list. Ordered, bought and collected.”

Now Borer was approached even harder by e-mail. With primitive words and innuendos that we don’t want to print here now. Borer’s response to this: He is making this hate message public on his social channels. “Why do people have to spread hate and make such pathetic comments? I just don’t feel like it,” he wrote.

“That Has to Stop”

Borer told “Zueri Today”: “I’m considering filing a complaint for the first time. It’s just one sentence but it does so much. It makes me sad and angry. Just everything about it doesn’t add up. That has got to stop.”

Borer then even contacts the sender of the hate message. “I wrote to the person how pathetic the comment was and that I wish him or her lots of love.” This person then apologized, but for Borer the matter is not over yet. He therefore suggests that the person donate a significant amount to Pink Cross, the umbrella organization for gay and bisexual men in Switzerland. Then the matter is settled for him.

Despite all the hate messages, Borer does not want to be defeated and will continue to remain open about his homosexuality and fatherhood in the future. “Maybe we can encourage other couples to go public with us,” he said in a January Blick interview. (DL)
