His last job in professional football was sports director at Aarau, which ended with his resignation in 2017. The former FCZ, Lucerne, Wohlen, Lugano, Sion and Aarau coach Raimondo Ponte (68) has long since retired – but now, eight years after his last engagement as a coach, he surprisingly makes his comeback as a coach.
Ponte will take over Aarau’s women in the Women’s Super League from the summer – a completely new experience for the Windischer. “I never thought it possible to work in women’s football. That would not have been the issue. But a lot of progress has been made in recent years.”
But Ponte himself was also surprised when Aarau’s co-presidency with Walter Beerli and Willy Wenger and the new technical director, Marcello Stellato, asked him for the job for the new season. Ponte: “I’m curious what I can teach the team.”
He says he recently turned down two or three offers from the men’s division. Mainly for two reasons: Ponte no longer wants to change his place of residence and he was skeptical about offers from competitions such as the Promotion League because of the circumstances with the evening training.
But also the conditions for the Aarau women, who play as an independent club under the label “Red Boots” and are not part of FCA vom Brügglifeld, are not very professional. Most amateur players work or study alongside football, as is the case almost everywhere in Super League. The municipal public sports facility Schachen is used for playing and training, but there are no separate cubicles or places.
Ponte is counting on his name to make a difference off the field as well. “It’s Super League after all. We have to work to make sure the conditions are appropriate,” he says.
What’s sporty about it? Aarau is one of the small Super League clubs, they were only promoted two years ago. The qualification for the current play-offs against title favorite Servette was a success. Ponte says a success like St. Gallen’s surprise cup final qualification could also be there for FCA: “I’ve seen a few games. The potential is there.”
