Shouldn’t City’s equalizer count?

Carlo Ancelotti is furious because he saw the ball go to the side before City equalized.

When the otherwise cool Carlo Ancelotti (63) loses his nerve, something must have happened. The Real coach sees a yellow card after the 1-1 equalizer because he saw the ball in advance. To his incomprehension, the VAR does not intervene.

Two dream goals in the semi-final of the Champions League in Madrid ensure that everything is still open in the second leg. But should Kevin de Bruyne (31) equalize in the 67th minute? Bernardo Silva (28) just keeps the ball in play shortly before the 1:1 – or not at all.

Ancelotti, who saw the scene from the sidelines from the best position, has a clear opinion. He goes on a rampage and takes on the fourth official. He later added at the press conference: “For me the ball was out, for the referee it wasn’t. That’s it. Technology says it too. I don’t understand why the VAR didn’t check that. The referee has a lot of things tonight not considering.”

Why does the VAR not intervene?

Ancelotti receives support from coaching legend Arsène Wenger (73), who is now active for FIFA. As an expert at Bein Sports, the broadcaster uses 3D technology to provide photographic evidence, demonstrating his misunderstanding over the lack of a VAR check. “In situations like this you have to intervene. They either didn’t step back far enough to check if the ball was out – or they weren’t able to check if the ball was out.”

Wenger suspects that the video referee missed the correct images because the scene took place on the sideline and not on the baseline. Christina Unkel, referee and employed by CBS Sport as a rules expert, disagrees.

According to the VAR protocol, everything went correctly for them. In between the aforementioned Silva scene, Real Madrid had meanwhile won and lost the ball. This is a new stage of the game, so the video assistant didn’t need to check the scene from the sidelines. The discussions about the controversial 1:1 of the Citizens will therefore not stop – at least in Madrid. (dti)
