Sepp Maier is not a big fan of Yann Sommer, as the Bayern legend has said several times. After the renewed criticism of the entire Bayern leadership, the former Munich goalkeeper spoke in the “kicker” about the situation with the German record champion.
In the goalkeeper discussion, the 1974 world champion is still behind Bayern captain Manuel Neuer. But he also found positive and encouraging words for Nati goalkeeper Yann Sommer: “Yann is an excellent goalkeeper, his height doesn’t matter. He deserved to play for Bayern, he was just unlucky to end up with a team that was wasn’t good, it wasn’t easy.”
Maier is very disappointed by the unrest, although he thinks that “at Bayern a lot is swept under the carpet as long as you win, that has been the case for 40 years”. But he doesn’t like the new dimensions and the way things end in public: “Someone here once peppered someone else. But unlike the Mané-Sané drama, we solved it in the dressing room. You need a team that sticks together!”
On Monday, Bayern held a closed training session, according to “Bild”, the doors were closed extremely early at 9 a.m. The reason for this was that Manuel Neuer trained with the physio on the grass for the first time.
“I firmly believe that Neuer can continue his top performances. He’s just consistently world class and he’s got a genius that Yann Sommer lacks. The way he reads the game and plays along is great,” says the goalkeeper legend about the new comeback. (nsa)
