“This penalty has nothing to do with a swallow”

It is a birthday gift that cannot be bought. Zurich snatched away the last-minute victory in the classic two days after President Ancillo Canepa’s 70th birthday. The FCZ boss: “Especially the three points in Basel were a perfect gift that the team and the coaching staff gave me and all of us.”

The reason for the coup in Joggeli is the controversial penalty kick that Bledian Krasniqi takes against FCB defender Michael Lang – and which the whole of Basel, but also Blick referee expert Urs Meier, describes as a clear swallow.

For Canepa it is a 100% penalty right after the final whistle. He didn’t get rid of that the next day either. “Anyone who was a striker knows from their own experience that it often doesn’t take much for the defender to touch you and knock you down in the dynamic movement forward,” says the former forward of FC Rüti. “Wrong is wrong, whether the contact was violent or not. That strikers also provoke such duel situations is legitimate and smart. But this has nothing to do with swallows. It was all the better to be 2-0!”

The very first game at the age of 70 is so nerve-wracking for Canepa that it even becomes a premiere for the passionate pipe smoker. Because along the sidelines he gives smoke signals: “The nervous tension before the penalty was very high. This had to be ‘wasted’ somehow. It was the first time I blew the whistle for two minutes during a game.”
