There has been no trace of Norwegian biathlete Eivind Sporaland since the end of March. Police searches have so far turned up nothing. The parents of the missing athlete are now providing new details about his personality and his disappearance.
In an interview with Danish broadcaster TV2, they reveal that their son suffers from a mental illness. “He became mentally ill. He was open about it and talked to his friends and family about things he found difficult in the days leading up to his disappearance.”
The 22-year-old was said to have visited a hospital about 24 hours before his disappearance, but according to his parents, he was rejected. That same evening, his father visited him at home to support him.
Sporaland’s psychological problems only started shortly before the disappearance, according to the parents. “He was a healthy young man. The illness hit him suddenly and violently.”
Only a few hours after his father’s visit, the biathlete disappeared without a trace and has not resurfaced to this day.
In mid-April, a glimmer of hope came to the Sporaland case when the suspect’s mobile phone was found. But so far, that hasn’t gotten the researchers any further. According to the authorities, the evaluation of the data is more complicated than expected.
As the responsible officer, Ragnhild Ouren, told TV2, a new approach would soon be taken in the case: “We are not yet looking for a deceased person. However, we regularly evaluate whether we should not do that.” (byl)
