A month ago, the Sanctions Committee of the Swiss Equestrian Federation (SVPS) imposed a mega ban: it withdraws show jumping rider Paul Estermann, who has been convicted of multiple intentional animal cruelty, for seven years. And thus the long-awaited sign has been set in this tiresome case, which has dragged on for six years since its first publication.
But Estermann still does not admit defeat. The 59-year-old filed a timely report, the SVPS reports. Since it is now an ongoing procedure, there is no further information from the association. The case is now before the association court of the SVPS.
The decision of the Lucerne district court has been final since January. The SVPS board therefore immediately submitted an application to the internal sanctions committee for a temporary suspension. However, this was waived and the final one was announced instead in mid-April. In the clear words of Sako President Thomas Räber, “Sako considers the rider’s wayward, selfish and aggressive behavior a blatant disregard for the horse’s well-being.”
The crux: Since the provisional suspension was lifted at the time and Estermann has now appealed the final decision, the former team rider will likely return to riding in the meantime. It should be expected that it will take another two to three months before the next decision is made. So the inglorious drama continues.
