Seven red cards in wild Superclasico

1/10
In the beginning there was great jubilation at River Plate: a penalty was scored in extra time to make it 1-0.

Packs form in the 93rd minute. River Plate takes the lead in the home derby against Boca Juniors thanks to an injury time penalty and wins the duel between arch-rivals 1-0. The situation escalates. Players, coaches and officials can hardly be separated from security guards.

The injury time lasts no less than 19 minutes. The referee hands out seven red cards. Three players on each side are sent off the field and Boca coach Jorge Almirón (51) also sees the red.

Escalation after goal celebration

Why does pack formation occur? As the majority of the river players rushed the scorer, one reportedly cheered in the face of longtime Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero, 36. When he wanted to grab and correct his opponent, his teammates rushed to support him, the keeper describes veteran gives his opinion to CBS Sports.

Enzo Pérez (37), captain of River Plate, describes the scenes as “terrible madness from all sides”. “We tried to break up, calm down, leave. But when there are so many people who don’t belong on the pitch and they get nervous, it becomes difficult.”

Successful coach Demichelis with martial words

“If the result is not as desired, passion can sometimes conquer all,” says Martin Demichelis (42). The former Bayern player (from 2003 to 2010) has coached his youth club since January 2023 – he tops the league with River Plate – and finds warlike words: “In Argentina we cannot bear to lose – we’d rather let ourselves be killed.”

This is especially true for the two clubs in Buenos Aires. The rivalry between River Plate and Boca Juniors has long transcended the sports arena. The clubs once had the same origin, coming from the poor harbor district “La Boca”. However, in the 1930s, River moved to a wealthier neighborhood and has since been nicknamed “Los Millionarios”.

Superclasico a history of violence

Boca Juniors stayed true to the waterfront. A fierce rivalry developed over the decades. River against Boca sometimes became a class struggle. While both teams today attract fans from different demographics, River and Boca are the polarizing figureheads of Argentine football.

The history of the Superclasico is also a history of fan violence. The most recent example is the 2018 Copa Libertadores final, the South American Champions League. Due to security concerns, the duel between the arch-rivals abroad had to be moved to Madrid. Previously, the Boca Juniors team bus was attacked with stones – several players were injured.

For fear of violent excesses, no guest fans are allowed in Argentina, with a few exceptions. Anyone who sees how even the players forget each other in this heated duel will understand why. (dti)
