Sion wants to have Winti-Match held again

Heartbeat in Valais: Christian Constantin (right, here next to his son and sports director Barth) feels unfairly treated.

There is no consensus on what happened in the 71st minute in the basement confrontation between Sion and Winterthur. The SRF reporter sees things differently than the SRF expert Kay Voser, the players of both teams differ anyway and the fans are also divided.

As it turns out, referee Luca Cibelli’s decision to decide on a hand penalty has never been so abnormal as to be a clear and blatant wrong call. Therefore, the conditions for an intervention by the VAR – in this case the experienced Sascha Kever – were simply not there.

This to clarify why Sion president Christian Constantin became so upset. He asks – and the question is rhetorical: “Surely the VAR should never intervene?” Yet he did. “And I wonder: why?”

Constantine on the palm

CC doesn’t get a satisfactory answer, so he searches further. “I have to come to the assumption that there is a new rule. That it doesn’t matter that a so-called supporting hand is so far from the body that the player blocks the ball in the manner of a goalkeeper. Maybe I missed something.”

Winti-Schmid on the penalty scene: “I think it was a natural move”(02:22)

Referee Cibelli argued after the match that the hand was only there to support the body, which is why handball should not be penalized. CC is furious at this argument: “What the Winterthurer is doing there is, as I said, a goalkeeper parade. nothing else. And when you hear such justifications, there is only one conclusion: this championship has been manipulated! The referees openly manipulate football! They cannot guarantee that the championship will run correctly and regularly.”

Three crazy demands on Monday

Those are valid accusations. But that’s not enough for Wallis. FC Sion will release an official communiqué on Monday. And how!

In a letter from the league, the club is demanding that the result be “cancelled and the match repeated”. In addition, Swiss referees should be placed under a kind of guardianship of FIFA, because otherwise there is a risk of distortion of competition. And Wallis made a third, no less absurd suggestion in the message on Monday: the clubs should be able to cancel ‘neutral representatives’ at VAR headquarters in order to provide ‘regular operation’.

“I Don’t Believe Them Anymore”

Even after the game against Winterthur, CC had other suggestions to make the league and especially the referees better. “Since the referees are obviously not neutral towards us, there is only one solution: there must be foreign referees who are not biased. That must be implemented immediately.”

And further: «Before the match, the referees are always friendly to us. Even after the game. And then referee boss Daniël Wermelinger apologizes like after the FCZ game. But I don’t believe this is fair anymore when I see what happens during the game, how we get slaughtered there. And because it repeats itself over and over.”

Sportingly, the situation for FC Sion is now really precarious. The Red Lantern glows in the tourbillon. And the rest of the program speaks everything but Wallis: Servette, YB, Luzern and St. Gallen. It smells like Barrage in Zion again.
