The scene will be discussed in Valais for a few more days. 68 minutes into the direct Barrage duel between Sion and Winterthur: Dimitri Cavaré crosses into the penalty area from the right, where Winti captain Yannick Schmid stumbles, falls and gets the ball on his arm. Referee Luca Cibelli immediately whistles for a penalty.

Two minutes later, the Freiburg – after consultation with the VAR – reversed its decision. After extensive consultation with Sascha Kever in Volketswil, Cibelli took the penalty kick back. The result: Sion eventually loses the basement duel through Nishan Burkart’s goal in the 21st minute and is now bottom of the table.

“Everything is technically correct”

Back to the excitement scene in the 68th minute. The rules state that there is no punishable handball if a player falls to the ground and leans on his arm. “Based on the interpretation of the rules, everything is correct,” confirms Christophe Girard, chairman of the referee committee, to Blue. The arm is considered a support. On the other hand, if Schmid had hit the ball a second time, the penalty would have been justified.

The case is so tricky that referee Luca Cibelli stepped in front of the TV camera to justify his decision. Almost a sensation, Swiss referees never actually stand in front of the microphone after matches. Cibelli at Blue clearly: “In the game I whistled a handball because I saw a second movement with my arm when Yannick Schmid fell to the ground.” He did not see this second movement later on the VAR video, so the original decision was corrected – and no penalty for Sion. Cibelli continues: “I understand that a sense of injustice can arise from people seeing a hand on the ball. But such contact between the arm and the ball is not an offence.”

Unlike Cibelli, the Sion players do not appear in front of the media. Commissioned by Barth Constantin. “The reason is simple: there is a lot of frustration and we want to avoid breaking certain boundaries verbally,” said the sporting director.

However, Constantin junior himself commented on the (correct) penalty theft: “The problem is that in a similar situation in Winterthur, a penalty was awarded against us. And the VAR did not intervene. It is not decided on the same scale.”

Barth Constantin refers to FC Sion’s draw in Winterthur on February 18 (1-1). Winti’s goal came from a penalty after a handball from Sion defender Joel Schmied. The action is actually very similar to Wintis Schmid’s. The anger of the Valaisers is fueled by a wrong penalty against them a week ago in the Letzigrund. This allowed the FCZ to equalize the game to 2:2.

“problematic content”

But Barth Constantin knows that the main reason for the bankruptcy at home is not the penalty scene. “Today the referee wasn’t the biggest problem, it was the content of our game. What we offered is problematic, just not good.”

Coach David Bettoni’s analysis is similar. “I can’t explain that first half. It’s not enough to just play 45 minutes. It’s a shame, because we’ve been getting better lately. Fortunately, being last at the end of the season doesn’t mean direct relegation. » Bettoni should have given an important reason himself why he is not at risk of being fired despite falling to the bottom of the table.”We trust that he will set up the team,” says Constantin.
