Relegation battle, emotions, drama. It all happens at Schalke. And at the right time, the Royal Blues seem to have woken up. First the 2-1 win against Werder. Now won 3-2 against Mainz on Friday evening.
But the trio in Mainz is something to talk about. Schalke scored the winning goal in the 102nd minute. By fine. Before that, substitute Anthony Caci picked his shirt at Schalke’s Marius Bülter. Referee Matthias Jöllenbeck (36) points to the point after a long video study – and thus ensures the decision in this dramatic match.
And since there is still a lot at stake for Mainz at the table, Jöllenbeck’s whistle is responsible for one emotional outburst or the other. “This decision is a scandal!” Mainz coach Bo Svensson would have shouted through the catacombs after the game, according to “Sport1”. Ex-Fifa referee Manuel Graefe agrees with the two. “No Punishment!” he announced on Twitter. You should have kept playing. And Gräfe also criticizes the competition. It was “irresponsible” to give such a relegation game to a young referee with little experience on matchday 31.
Jöllenbeck himself stands by his decision. “Because I know how much is at stake here, I wanted to take the opportunity to take another look myself,” he said after the game. “According to the photos, there was a clear and long wait. That’s why I decided to give Schalke a penalty.”
Mainz coach Svensson has since apologized for his tantrum. “The choice of words was exaggerated, they were emotions, but my opinion has not changed. It is my clear opinion that this whistle is a mistake.”
