The man seems like nothing, absolutely nothing, can upset him. Even during the most emotional matches in Kybunpark, when red cards and insulting songs rain down from the stands, when more than 19,000 make the stadium an overflowing steam boiler, Alain Sutter (55) stands almost motionless next to the press box. «A calm sea is clear. When you are calm, you see more clearly. Hyperventilating doesn’t help,” says the head of sports at St. Gallen.

Not everyone in eastern Switzerland sees it that way at the moment. Some get a sigh after ten competitive games without a win. FCSG has not been this bad since the 2011 relegation season. Since the contract with Peter Zeidler was prematurely extended for another two years until 2027 in January, the St. Gallen have only two trios left. Was it a mistake to give the coach a pension? “No,” says Sutter. “Today we are still happy and glad we did it. We are very happy with Peter’s work, it fits well.”

Sutter appreciates Zeidler’s emotions

Zeidler is the pure counterpart to the standalone Sutter. The 60-year-old is constantly under power. Often in motz mode. Impulsive. Emotions that often overflow. No problem for Sutter. But on the contrary. “Around the game, you need this energy, these emotions. The more, the more positive. I really appreciate that.” But he could understand that Zeidler’s behavior could be discussed controversially. “That is understandable, especially if you are in a bad sporting phase.”

In general, after ten games without a win, everything is called into question. Also the transfer policy. For example, after the departure of Daouda Guindo in the winter, was it a mistake not to sign a full-back and to use two attacking players Geubbels and Dajaku instead? “I am convinced that you cannot make wrong decisions. Because every decision leads to a realization,” says Sutter. “In hindsight, of course, we would have decided differently, because both Isaac Schmidt and Patrick Sutter were struggling with injuries.” changing, so there’s no point in talking about it, it’s now about escaping the negative spiral, preferably on Saturday night against champion YB (8.30pm).

Sutter is confident that this will work. He trains every day. And he feels the team has recognized the seriousness of the situation. “Everyone knows what it’s about. We’re not a larifari company.” What is still missing, and that is the great art, the secret of every elite athlete, is lightness.”When you combine seriousness and lightness, you fly,” says Sutter. That is why the team met this week to go karting together. “There was a lot of laughter, it was a lot of fun.”

Does YB have the master blues?

The opponent from Bern has also had a lot of fun lately, last Sunday there was an exuberant championship party including Friday evening. Will the master still feel the hardships of the celebrations? «YB can play freely after getting the championship title. This is that lightness that we miss. The question is whether YB will take it seriously, “said Sutter.

What makes the 1994 World Cup participant confident: that you have never been shot out of the stadium this season – and could have taken something with you in almost every game. In addition, the FCSG won the last home game against YB. At the beginning of September it was 2-1, when Green and White greeted each other at the top of the table.

You’ve been waiting ten games for a win, but the euphoria still seems unbroken. Also on Saturday, almost 19,000 people make a pilgrimage to the Kybunpark. “We’ve played for titles three times in the last four years, what happened before still works, the audience response is feedback for our work,” says Sutter.

But he is not naive, said the head of sports: “If we continue as we have done in recent weeks, the stadium will not be full.”
