Foot injury – Mujinga Kambundji misses three top races

Switzerland’s fastest woman has to take it easy: Mujinga Kambundji (30) is injured. The national record holder in the 100m and 200m is struggling with a foot injury. An inflammation in the plantar fascia prevents her start of the Diamond League season. She misses the meetings of the royal class in Rabat, Rome and Paris.

For Kambundji, foot inflammation is not a new problem, she has had problems in this area for six years. “The pain usually goes away after a longer break,” she says. This time, however, she is still struggling – the break between her European gold run in Istanbul and the training camp in Belek at the end of March was clearly too short.

Specifically, this means that Kambundji will start the season at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo (June 15) or in Lausanne (June 30). “Of course I prefer to start in May, but the season is still long and fortunately the World Cup will not take place until the end of August,” she says.

Autologous blood injections should help

Autologous blood therapy (ACP) aims to cope with the inflammation. “Blood is taken from the athlete, the plasma and platelets are separated and activated by centrifugation and then precisely injected into the fascia under ultrasound guidance,” Bern sports physician Jörg P. Dünkel said in a statement from Kambundji’s management. “Not bad in itself, but still
needs some time because Mujinga is not allowed to bear the full weight after the injection.”

The break may not serve Kambundji well, but their goals remain big. The Berner is determined to break her Swiss records again this year in the 100 m (10.89 seconds) and 200 m (22.05). “In ideal conditions and with the right form, I can run even faster,” she says.
