Siren causes panic attack in Ukrainian tennis player

Maryna Zanevska had an awkward moment.

The annual siren test takes place in Switzerland on the first Wednesday of February. Different in France. There they cry every month on the first Wednesday.

This is also the case in Saint-Malo, where a Challenger tournament is taking place this week. Ukraine-born Maryna Zanevska (29, WTA 75), who plays for Belgium since 2016, has just won the first set against American Katie Volynets (21, WTA 103) 6-2.

Violent crying spells

But then the sirens start to wail. And cause a panic attack in Zanevska. “I have no idea why, but the siren was on. Maybe 20 seconds, but it felt like an eternity,” she later wrote on Instagram. “I started crying loudly and couldn’t stop.”

It hardly surprises anyone that sirens provoke such a reaction in a Ukrainian. The country has been at war with Russia for more than a year. Only Zanevska has never been there since. You’ve never heard a siren in a war zone, “but it was such a triggering noise. My heart rate was 200. I was overwhelmed.”

The incident throws her completely off balance. In the end she loses 6:2, 4:6, 5:7. “When I’m on the field, that’s usually the place where I forget my problems,” she concludes her statement. One can only hope that this will continue in the future.

Others also experienced panic attacks

Panic attacks have also been experienced by other tennis players. In March, the Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko (30) had to give up for her duel with the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (25) in Indian Wells (US). She was triggered by a conversation with WTA boss Steve Simon about the participation of Russian and Belarusian players in tournaments.

Last year, Simona Halep (31) dropped out in the 2nd round of the French Open after a panic attack. The Romanian could only guess what caused this. “I’ve had a tough two years, with injuries and a lot of pressure, also because of the pandemic and everything,” she told Eurosport. “Today I broke down a little bit.” (bir)
