They were two of the really big figures in the skiing circuit last season: Mikaela Shiffrin and Alexander Aamodt Kilde.
While the American dominated the women’s World Cup at will and won the big crystal ball, the Norwegian only had to admit defeat to dominator Marco Odermatt in the overall World Cup and won the downhill sphere. For the next season, the couple is now making clear demands to the ski association FIS in terms of climate.
The two signed the open letter from the environmental organization Greenpeace to FIS chairman Johan Eliasch. In it they claim CO2-Travel less and invest more in climate protection. For example, according to the letter, the fact that the ski circus, including teams and athletes, flies across the Atlantic twice a season is too much.
“It is high time to address and think about very important issues,” Kilde told the AP news agency. “We see that the world is changing and what this change means for the sport. I want future generations to experience winter and do what I did.”
Shiffrin, Kilde and other athletes are now demanding specific changes from the FIS. So the season should start later and a schedule that means less travel. The aim must be for the FIS to balance its climate balance within a few years. The world federation will discuss the issues this week at a meeting in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Last year, the ski season should have started at the end of October with the races on the Matterhorn, but these were canceled due to a lack of snow and high temperatures.
For this season, the races in Zermatt are scheduled from November 11. Whether this date will change after the demands of the ski stars will be decided at the meeting in Dubrovnik. (byl)
