There was a premiere at the Tour of the Gila in New Mexico, USA. Austin Killips (27) is the first trans woman to win a UCI event and stage. The American won the fifth and final stage last Sunday, eight seconds ahead of the second. She secured the overall victory with a lead of 1 minute and 28 seconds.
After her victory, the cyclist thanked the other riders on Instagram that it had been “a week full of nonsense on the internet” and that she felt she was in good hands.
During the course of the event, voices were heard again on Twitter and in the cycling world calling for the exclusion of transgender women from women’s racing. American Inga Thompson (59) even accused the world federation UCI of “destroying women’s cycling”.
The federation defended its rules in a statement: “The UCI recognizes that transgender athletes wish to compete according to their gender identity. The rules are based on the latest scientific insights and are applied consistently. The UCI continues to monitor the development of scientific research and may change its rules in the future if there is new knowledge.”
The organization takes a different approach than, for example, World Athletics (athletics) or World Aquatics (swimming). Both associations prohibit trans women from participating in women’s competitions. (nsa)
