For VfB Stuttgart, the cup should have been the chance to save an epidemic season after all. But nothing comes of it, in the home game Mercedes-Benz Arena they lose the semi-final against Frankfurt and cannot confirm the positive trend of the last weeks. They now have to fully concentrate on the relegation battle. Eintracht Frankfurt, on the other hand, would like to repeat the success of the 2017/18 season when they beat the greats Bayern Munich.

With the narrow 3:2 victory, the Adler prevail and are in the DFB Cup final. Like the first semi-final, this match is heated, both on the field and in the stands. The game is characterized by many fouls in midfield and referee Daniel Schlager has a lot to do. He has to draw three yellow cards in the first ten minutes alone.

Frankfurt turns game around in four minutes

Sporting: The first half is balanced and both teams get good chances. Tiago Tomas put VfB Stuttgart ahead in the 19th minute, Frankfurt goalie Kevin Trapp didn’t look too good. After the change of half, the game becomes more open, with a double blow within four minutes Eintracht turns the game around. The second goal also saw Fabian Bredlow look unclassy in the Stuttgart penalty area before causing the penalty to make it 3-1.

Then referee Schlager comes into the picture again: in stoppage time he looks for minutes at a possible handball and keeps the entire stadium in suspense. The decision: no punishment, rightly so. Frankfurt is happy, Stuttgart is not.

Record tumble – final against Leipzig

Eintracht captain Makoto Hasebe set a record in reaching the final: at 39 years and 105 days, he is the oldest player since records were collected in the DFB Cup to score a goal. And striker Kolo Muani also breaks an old record for Eintracht, with his sixth goal in the current league he is tied with Bum-Kun Cha (1980/81) and Bernd Hölzenbein (1973/74), who scored as many goals in one go made campaign.

In the final, Oliver Glasner’s team will meet RB Leipzig on June 3 at the Olympiastadion Berlin.
