The young Bernese wrestlers opened the season with a bang. Adrian Walther (21) won the Bern-Jurassic Wrestling Festival, beating Matthias Aeschbacher (31) in the final round. After three and a half minutes, the last runner of the last Confederacy lay with his back in the sawdust. Walther’s young colleagues Matthieu Burger (22) and Michael Ledermann (22) followed in second and third place.
With Michael Wiget (24) and Fabian Staudenmann (23), two more young wrestlers are in the starting blocks to follow in the footsteps of the Bernese kings Stucki, Wenger and Co. No other sub-association can boast such a density of strong young wrestlers. So what is the Berner’s secret?
The Mittellander Michael Wiget bets on the strong team spirit of the Berner. “When we wave away, the bottom line is that we are all just Bernese, everyone is fighting for the same canton.” But not only the coat of arms of Bern connects these young wrestlers. The quality of the association is largely due to kings Kilian Wenger, Matthias Sempach, Matthias Glarner and Christian Stucki.
They formed an entire generation of wrestlers. And were probably the reason for one or the other talented Bernese boy to aspire to a career as a wrestler. “They were and still are role models that you can touch. If you have a problem or question, you can call one of these four, and everyone will help you,” says law student Wiget enthusiastically.
Now that these kings are slowly but surely retiring, the pressure on the younger generation is increasing. Though she takes it pretty easy. “That pressure is distributed over several broad shoulders. If you can speak of pressure at all,” says Michael Wiget.
His fellow club member Adrian Walther agrees. He sees the fact that he and his colleagues are allowed to accept the legacy of the Bernese kings as a greater motivation. “It is a great compliment that this role has been entrusted to us.” And he immediately followed up with a declaration of war: “Even if the kings are no longer in the sawdust, we want to put the Bernese stamp on Schwing Switzerland.”
