Jürgen Klopp (55) sometimes cannot control his emotions, which he self-critically admitted. The dramatic 4:3 against Tottenham last weekend is the latest example.
In complete ecstasy, “Kloppo” cheers right in front of the fourth official, sees yellow, and even injures himself. While showing understanding in celebrating his goal, he sharply criticized referee Paul Tierney (42) and accused him of having a problem with him and his team.
“I really don’t know what he has against us,” Klopp didn’t hold back the Sky microphone. “He said there was no problem, but that can’t be true,” said the coach, who also speaks of a “history” with Tierney – which of course means controversial decisions against his team.
Klopp was also upset by the referee’s whistle for 90 minutes on Sunday. After his late warning, he shoots at Tierney: “My celebration was not necessary. But what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not okay.” that fits. Only problem: Tierney said nothing wrong.
The Premier League Refereeing Body (PGMOL) defends him. Referees are recorded during matches and after watching the audio track, Tierney – unlike Klopp – is off the hook. Tierney had “acted professionally” at all times. “We reject any suggestion that Tierney’s behavior was inappropriate.”
The coach, on the other hand, is having a hard time. English media think FA Klopp can suspend him longer. Ex-Liverpool player Dean Saunders criticizes the German on radio station Talksport for his statements: “I think as soon as you question the integrity of the referee, you are in big trouble.”
Klopp’s anger at Tierney has grown over the years. Controversial umpiring decisions were often linked to loss of points for the Reds. The most recent example is the home game against Arsenal, in which Tierney’s assistant caused an elbow scandal at Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson, but escaped without further consequences. (dti)
