Holger Rune causes problems with fans in Madrid.

He can’t help it. Holger Rune (20) also took on the crowd at the Masters in Madrid, in a match against a local hero of all places.

In the round of 16 thriller against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (23), which only ended at midnight on Sunday, the Dane served in the first set to make it 4-3 and won the point thanks to a playback error by the Spaniard. He wants the challenge, claims the print he sees is wrong. The challenge shows: the ball was in.

While Fokina vehemently argues with the chair umpire Carlos Bernardes and the supervisor and even questions the electronic system, Rune duly switches sides. Then it happens: he examines the imprint of the ball and then wipes it away – provocative, as the Spanish spectators find it.

Referee gives paternal advice

The first of several flute concertos follows. And if you know Rune, you know how he reacts to it. He smiles off hostilities and then provokes at every opportunity. The Brazilian referee Bernardes stops this immediately.

In a paternal way, he advises the youngster not to get involved in the provocations. “There are viewers you can’t control when you do things like that. If you continue like this, it will only get worse.” Rune doesn’t seem to want to take the advice and always tries to justify herself. Finally, Bernardes says, “If you just play tennis, they won’t do anything anymore. I just want to help you get through this. I have experience.”

“Next time I’ll take a nap”

The day after, the world number 7 spoke on Twitter: “There was a lot of talk about the bad behavior of the Spanish fans. The public didn’t understand what was going on.” He explains that Fokina wanted the electronic line system to be overruled by the referee, which is not possible.

“It took forever to explain that to my opponent. And they didn’t bother to let the viewers know,” continues Rune. He jokes: “Next time I’ll just take a nap while they discuss.

After a little over three hours, Rune finally had to admit defeat. But he doesn’t seem angry: “I have nothing against the Spaniards and I’m looking forward to returning to Madrid next year.” (che)
