Daniele Sette (31) is familiar with low blows. The giant slalom specialist from St. Moritz has often been written off by experts. But the Bündner always fought back. That’s exactly what he’s planning now.

After being informed that he no longer had a place in a Swiss ski team, he did not think twice about resigning. And this despite the fact that, just like five years ago, he has to start all over again at the very bottom, namely in the regional association. “I haven’t shown what I’ve got yet. And I know where to pull the trigger,” he says boldly.

Fresh start in New Zealand

Sette joins the Global Racing Team, an association of drivers who are not in national federations or hoping for better training opportunities there. This is not new territory for him, he was already in the team in 2018. “We will train in New Zealand in the summer and gather at the Continental Cup to improve my starting place in the World Cup.”

At the World Cup? Precisely. Sette is convinced that thanks to the large starting contingent of Swiss-Ski he will find his place at the top of the ski competition again. Then he wants to collect more points than last winter, when he only made the top 30 twice in nine World Cup races: 19th in Alta Badia (It) and 23rd in Adelboden.

«I had problems with the new ski boot, the model just didn’t fit me. Now I have decided to switch and go to Nordica, where I will become number 1 in the giant slalom.” At the Italian manufacturer, Sette meets ex-slalom top man Manfred Mölgg, the new race manager. know is there.

“I hope that other factors will also come into play”

After the relegation, Sette has to hand in his car to Swiss-Ski. He estimates that he will have to invest about 75,000 francs out of his own pocket in skiing for the new season. “On paper, I wasn’t good enough last winter. So I understand the association’s decision. Nevertheless, of course I had hoped that other factors would also count. But I’m not mad, I’m coming back stronger than ever.”
