Death threats to referee Sascha Stegemann

The reactions after Dortmund’s draw in Friday’s game in Bochum were very emotional: Borussia’s anger and disappointment were aimed at referee Sascha Stegemann. In fact, he didn’t cut a good figure during the game. He denied the Dortmunders at least one penalty kick. He was so sure he was right that he didn’t even look at the disputed scene on screen to make sure.

So he had to apologize. “In hindsight I have to say: I would have been happy if I had seen it again. Of course my goal is to make the right decisions on the pitch. If you look at it, it’s a penalty.” Stegemann addressed the scene in which Bochum defender Danilo Soares is late against BVB Adeyemi in the penalty area, tackles the striker and escapes with impunity.

Would have been correct: penalty kick for Dortmund and the yellow card for Soares, who would have been sent off with yellow-red. Dortmund would have won the match. And now I don’t have to hope desperately for Bayern’s next blunder. In terms of sports, everything is of course highly dramatic. But everything is just a game and Stegemann is just a person.

Stegemann files a complaint

On Sunday, the referee revealed in a one-two punch on “Sport1” what he has been through since this Friday, and that goes beyond the limit of what is permissible: “I have a lot of understanding for the emotions on Friday night. But on Saturday, my family and I received very specific threats. Then he filed a report.”

Meanwhile, BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke has spoken out and vehemently opposed the threats and scorn on social media. “Despite all disappointments, we cannot tolerate any form of hostility, slander or threats, whether personal or anonymous via social media channels.”

Immediately after the match, the club discussed their views with the referee. He then assured, “How sorry he is. That’s the end for us,” the statement said.

Stuttgart boss Alexander Wehrle, who was also a guest at the double pass, said immediately afterwards that there could be no “death threats” to a referee.

It is unclear how Stegemann will proceed. Even during the Sunday morning broadcast, he was under personal protection. The most important thing for him is, first of all, to let everything sink in, analyze it, and then “work out a plan with the family in broad terms.”
