Ali Karimi (44) is still a fugitive. The former Bayern star has supported the protest movement in his home country of Iran from the start. The judiciary summarily accused him of “solidarity with the enemy”. The 126-time international then fled to Dubai. But even there he is no longer safe.
In an interview with the German Football Museum, Karimi explains that he had to change his place of residence again. “I have received death threats from various sources. That is why I was forced to distance myself even further from Iran.” It is not known where the 44-year-old currently resides.
“It’s a terrible feeling to be in exile,” says Karimi. There is only one way for him to return to Iran. “My hope is that the revolution of women, life and freedom will be successful.”
The 44-year-old hopes that more Iranian footballers will join the movement. “Especially national players always have a place in the hearts of their country’s fans. When you look at this special platform, I think it’s the duty of every footballer to do something for society.”
During his career, Karimi played for Bayern Munich and Schalke, among others. With the team from Munich he became German champion and cup winner. In addition to Karimi, Iran’s national record player and ex-Bayern star Ali Daei (54) also ended up on the government’s radar because he showed solidarity with the protest movement. (mab)
