Gian Maria Odermatt (18) was already at the Schwingkeller at the age of five – even though his father, who was a football fan, and his mother, who was Italian, had little to do with the traditional national sport. But during the first trial it was all over for the boy: “My enthusiasm for wrestling turned everyday family life a bit upside down. Suddenly my father took me to a party almost every Sunday,” says the primary construction student from Uster.
That clearly paid off. Last season, Gian Maria Odermatt got his first division wreath in Northeast Switzerland. A huge achievement for an 18 year old. Although the young man from Zurich has to serve in the army in the summer, he has ambitious goals. Odermatt wants to get four to five wreaths if all goes well. Ideally enough to climb into the sawdust on the Unspunnen at the end of the season.
He is already a little king: Sinisha Lüscher (17) from Uerkheim wins the Swiss Young Wrestling Day in 2021. His talent and will impress. Schwingklub Olten-Gösgen trainer Gregor Bucher is enthusiastic about his protégé. What sets Sinisha apart is his sheer ambition. “Wrestling is his absolute priority. He wants to get better, wants to be at the top and works hard for that.” But this ambition can also be dangerous. The Lüscher coach is forced to give the commercial trainee a break. “If I allowed him, he would also the young wrestlers take part in every festival. But he must not burn himself!”
Lüscher’s pleasure in swinging is so overwhelming that he hides stupid jokes and skeptical looks because of his skin color. Again and again. He even says of himself, “I want to be the first black wrestler king.” If Lüscher continues to shake like this, it is quite realistic.
Marc Lustenberger (20) also has to force you to take a break every now and then. The powerhouse from Hasle in Lucerne really pushed the turbo last season, winning seven wreaths. As a part-time ski instructor, he ticked off two milestones for every Schwinger. He was awarded the division wreath in Central Switzerland. And on the Brünig, the typical Schwinger Mecca, Lustenberger secures the first wreath at a mountain festival. If the man from Lucerne continues like this, you can expect Lustenberger in one or the other final round this summer.
It was 2010 when the then five-year-old Michael Moser (17) watched the ESAF in Frauenfeld on TV with wide eyes. Then you grabbed the Emmentaler. The plush bear was the first opponent to stop, and soon a neighbor took him to swing practice. Last year was the day, Moser himself competed in the ESAF in Pratteln and missed the crown by just half a point – and that with a vintage from 2005. Moser’s secret recipe? He can’t even name it himself. His goal for the season? Better. And of course participate in the unspunnen. “But I don’t want to think about it too much just yet. I just take it for granted.” A good plan. Things have usually gone pretty well for the easy-going Berner lately.
