It was just before Christmas 2021 when Mario Frick (48) signed with FC Luzern. On May 5, 500 days have passed since his signature. During this time, he has hit the ground running and emerged as one of the most interesting coaching profiles in Super League.

Flashback: When Frick came to Central Switzerland, the club had just come off its worst first half of the season and was bottom of the table. Under the Liechtensteiner, the FCL put in an impressive second half of the season and finally made it in the barrage against Schaffhausen. And now, in its first full season under Frick, Lucerne is actually looking at Europe with six games left.

The perfect match

“Frick has done a very good job since then”, sports director Remo Meyer praises his coach. He not only stabilized the team after the difficult last season. “The players have also developed under him and young talents have been integrated into the team.”

Key word talent: Since arriving in Lucerne, Frick has proven how good he is with boys. On his first training sessions he discovered a certain Ardon Jashari (20), who previously played with the U21, and put his trust in him. This captain is now a player of the national team and should soon bring a lot of money into the club’s treasury. Frick has given plenty of guys the chance again this season. One of them is Severin Ottiger (20), who has now fought for a permanent place.

Frick and Lucerne are a perfect match. This has in no small part to do with his moderation skills. It is thanks to him that, despite the simmering conflict between shareholders Bernhard Alpstaeg and Josef Bieri, the players deliver top performances week after week and are not influenced by it.

Tied until 2024

“He not only suits us with his professionalism as a trainer, but also as a person in central Switzerland. With his natural authority and his honest and direct manner, he reaches our team and is therefore an excellent fit for the club,” says Meyer.

Frick still has a contract with the FCL until 2024. There is no question of an extension yet. “We are very happy that he is with us. We are now fully concentrating on the final weeks of the championship and want to make it as successful as possible,” emphasized Meyer. As far as they are concerned, it should preferably end with a place in Europe.
