“When you’re ten or eleven years old and the son of Paul-André Cadieux, everyone likes you most of the year. When Gottéron lost in the final, I was the son of the incompetents.” Jan Cadieux once confessed that. So he knows what it’s like to lose in the final. It was 1991, 1992 and 1993 when his father coached Gottéron. And then there were the 2008 and 2010 seasons playing for Geneva. And then for the last time in 2021 as an assistant to Patrick Emond in the defeat in Zug.

Each time, the former striker watched as another team lifted the championship trophy. Jan Cadieux could only console himself a little with the fact that he had won the national title in 2003 with the great Lugano. He did not play in the final against HC Davos.

That is why this victory is of course something special for him. He is also special because he is the pinnacle of a frontier worker. “When we started summer training, he told us that we would make it to the end. That he is convinced.” This confession comes from a player of Servette. Yes, Jan Cadieux was convinced. This team has something special.

Throughout the season, he stressed that the failure of 2022 (Servette lost to Lugano in the pre-playoffs) should serve the aspirations of this talented and experienced side. “We have a mission”, was his credo. The perfect combination. You just have to find the right words so that everyone works together. Given the doubts at the start of the season, he said: “Everyone has to stick to this mission if we want to achieve our goals. For me, that means being honest with the players to be fair. And Jan Cadieux seems to have gotten better because he worked so hard and so much. “In the beginning I was often loud and the tone rougher,” he said before the playoffs. “But I tried to distance myself and spread more calm and serenity on the bench. If I have to raise my voice during the break or during the game, it’s no problem. But I try to channel my energy better.”

In the two seasons that he now sits on the bench as boss, his transformation is palpable. Although he doesn’t like stepping in front of the microphones during interviews, he has befriended them along the way despite his above-average analytical skills. It seems that with each successive victory for his team, he feels more legitimized to take that position. However, after the semi-final success against EVZ, he said he almost apologized to Dan Tangnes when he shook hands with the Norwegian after the series.

Now Jan Cadieux joins this Dan Tangnes in the circle of champion coaches. Cadieux is only 43 years old. And there is a good chance that he will return to the Geneva players’ bench next season, even if his contract expires at the end of the season.

This title is the first in Geneva-Servette history and the first of a coach named Cadieux in the playoffs era. Father Paul-André celebrated three titles with SCB in the seventies (74, 75, 77).
