Controversial FIA boss accused of sexism

Mohammed bin Sulayem and the FIA are in danger of getting into trouble.

The FIA is threatened with a homemade sexism scandal. Former secretary general Shaila-Ann Rao is said to have described several cases of sexist behavior by the FIA president in an internal letter, which is also controversial because of a dispute with Formula 1.

England’s “Telegraph” reports on the allegations, speaking to employees and officials who paint a picture of “unpredictable and intimidating behavior behind the scenes”. To date, the FIA has not launched an investigation.

Bin Sulayem treated Rao, a respected lawyer in motor racing circles, “very condescendingly”. He yelled at her in front of other team bosses and drivers, repeatedly calling her “that woman” to third parties. “She dared to say ‘no’ in front of other people, which seemed to trigger him.” Rao, who served as FIA Secretary General from June to November 2022, felt “humiliated” by him.

Old-fashioned and conservative?

The FIA president has faced allegations of sexism for the second time this year. An old statement recently leaked that he “doesn’t like women who think they are smarter than men.” His proponents argue that he is a product of his upbringing, not sexist per se. This is supported by the fact that a female CEO was appointed for the first time during his tenure and a focal point for equality, diversity and inclusion was created.

His critics say he just wants to put himself in a good light in the western world. ‘He’s very old-fashioned. Very conservative. He generally doesn’t like people who revolt against him, let alone women.” The pressure on the already controversial FIA president is unlikely to ease after this report. (dti)
