FCB wrote their next European Cup fairytale last Thursday when they knocked out favorites Nice 2-1 in the Conference League quarter-finals. And this even without fans.
After the French state permanently banned Basel fans from entering the country on the day of the match, it was too late to cancel the trip. Most of the fans were already in the coastal city and eventually met in Sanremo, Italy, to watch the game together and then celebrate reaching the semi-finals.
When the ban was announced, Basel announced that they would support their fans’ travel expenses (flight, fuel or hotel) and support them in doing so. A week later, however, the disillusionment follows. The chance of a refund is small. Or the legal thresholds are extremely high. FCB announced this in a message on Wednesday.
“Any claims for reimbursement of travel expenses, which at best came to nothing due to the exclusion of FCB fans in Nice, must be made individually. A class action lawsuit or the like, in which FCB could at most have provided support, is excluded under French law,” the statement said. This means that each fan would have to sue the state of France individually, taking several steps in the process.
This also applies to proving that the state has defaulted. “However, due to last week’s decision, this should not be easy to prove,” writes FCB. However, there have been similar – successful – cases.
The whole process is extremely tedious and expensive. But: “Of course, each individual is free to take the appropriate legal action.”
In any case, there is good news for fans: the ticket vouchers for the Nice match can be refunded in the fan shop. (tired)
