Union Berlin continues to grow. Five games before the end, the Köpenicker are in third place in the Bundesliga, the Champions League is within reach. It goes without saying that the successful coach Urs Fischer (57) is much in demand in the German media world.

What Urs Fischer still finds difficult today: his resignation from FC Zurich in 2012. After less than two years in office, he was fired from “his” FCZ, where he became a legend as a player and went to the runner-up led title achieved in the previous season.
“It wasn’t easy to accept. Coming home and telling the family you’re unemployed was hard.” The dismissal was important for his development, but he still doesn’t seem to have fully digested it: “What bothered me the most was the way the divorce was handled. I still struggle with that today.”
After two successful years in Thun, Fischer became coach of FC Basel in 2015. With the then Ligakroesus he won three titles in two years, but here too it was over after two seasons. The reason for this was turmoil in the club and you were not completely convinced by his defensive style of play. For Fischer, the criticism was incomprehensible and unjustified at the time.
“There was a phase where I thought it was unfair. I then messed with the press and had to realize that this does more harm than good,” says Fischer. The coach learned to accept things as they are.
After Basel, the Berlin adventure followed in 2018. The union officials disagreed on the search for a coach and remembered an older search where Fischer was on the list – so they invited the Zurich man to a meeting in the German capital.
“I had a conversation with the president and the head of sports at Union and had a really good gut feeling,” says Fischer.
And his gut feeling is confirmed: in the first season under the Swiss, Unioner rose straight to the 1st Bundesliga, then it went steeply uphill from year to year.
An increase that is now crowned with the Champions League. But even five games before the end, the success guarantor on the sidelines does not want to say anything: “Let’s see if it is enough in the end,” he says modestly. Just like Urs Fischer.
