GC writes mega loss among the Chinese

And the numbers are staggering. In the 2021/2022 financial year, which ended on June 30, 2022, GC posted a loss of CHF 14.1 million. “The numbers don’t lie. We can’t hide that. But we also create a bit of transparency with it,” says GC Interim President Andras Gurovits.

It is striking how low the income from entrance fees, sponsorship and advertising is. If you add up the two items, you can see that GC clearly earned the least compared to the other clubs. On the one hand, this impressively shows how much the Hoppers miss their own stadium. Gurovits: “That’s why I keep repeating how important it is for us to have our own stadium.” On the other hand, it also shows how the GC brand has lost value.

Should we take such a loss into account again for the current financial year? “No. It has not been budgeted for and we do not expect it”, Gurovits clarifies. The recorded loss should also not affect any sales process. “It’s hard to say. I don’t think that should be the case with a serious prospect. But right now it’s like reading a crystal ball.”

Last week it was announced that GC owner Jenny Wang is having interested buyers screened by a merchant bank. However, there is no concrete intention to sell, Gurovits said a week ago: “In short, the Chinese owners are sticking to their financial commitment to GC and that the club is not for sale. Planning for the next season is proceeding normally and we expect to receive the license for the 2023/24 season initially on May 1.”
