Ibrahimovic should have made his comeback last weekend. In the away game in Lecce, however, the Swede injured himself during the warm-up. Even worse, according to a report in the “Corriere della Sera”, he could miss the rest of the season with calf problems.
Ibrahimovic already knew before this season that his career was coming to an end. He’s close to the finish line, he told ESPN last summer about the possibility of retiring. Before that, he had only good statements on the subject. As long as he doesn’t see anyone better than him, he will keep playing, he said in March 2022, for example. But even then he made it clear that he could only play as long as his body allowed it.
It is precisely this body that gives him a clear signal in his 25th season as a professional footballer. Almost 24 years after his professional debut for youth club Malmö, Ibrahimovic is experiencing a bullying season. Although he only returned to the Swedish national team last March, he was injured again during the move. Only once this year – on March 18 he captained Milan – was he in the starting eleven.
