He triumphed in the greatest classics, won gold at the World Championships and the Olympic Games and won the Tour de Suisse. But now Fabian Cancellara is in the back. “I’m sticking my head out, but the show belongs to the drivers,” says the 42-year-old. Cancellara is the boss of Tudor Pro Cycling, the first Swiss team in professional cycling for seven years. At the Tour de Romandie, the team sponsored by watch brand Tudor wants to shine for the first time on home soil. “We don’t just ride for fun, we want to win,” says Cancellara.
Tudor has three wins so far this season. A good record for the non-World Tour team, cycling’s premier league. “We want to go there, we have three years to do it.” It is striking: Cancellara often uses the word ‘we’, the ‘I’ of the past has largely disappeared. “Our staff consists of 70 people, we are 37 years old on average. It is very different from other teams, where many have long since reached retirement age. I’m not saying that our way is the only right one, but we are convinced of it.”
But what does Tudor stand for? Team boss Raphael Meyer: “People come first for us. In our conversations we pay attention to the person’s character, we want to know what drives them – not just in relation to cycling.” Only then do you deal with the athlete’s performance.
Twenty drivers are under contract, including eight Swiss. There are four in the Tour de Romandie: Sebastien Reichenbach (33), Tom Bohli (29), Joel Suter (25) and Yannis Voisard (24). “I feel that many drivers are blooming like flowers with us. We want to see performance, but we also give confidence. And we have fun. In the end, happy people perform better,” says Cancellara.
Tudor is not the only new Swiss team. Q36.5 is also there – it’s backed by the cycling apparel company of the same name and is much more international. Cancellara only looks at his people. And says: «I am very satisfied so far. We pull together, that’s how it should be.”
