Monday morning in Biel. Two days after the 7-1 defeat in Geneva. You might think the season ended prematurely by this slap in the face when you enter the Tissot Arena shortly after 11am. There is not a soul on the ice. You have to go towards the cloakroom to see that there is still life at EHC Biel.
A group of players are engaged in football. Others shuffle back and forth between the cubicle and the massage room. Some follow a light fitness program. But no one goes on the ice. “If it’s not possible now, it’s too late anyway. Then we could train all day and that wouldn’t help anymore,” says sports director Martin Steinegger (51). Sunday was completely free. “The players were forbidden to enter the hall to come in”, explains assistant coach Thomas Zamboni (36). Prescribed main ventilation was announced.
For Gaëtan Haas (31) it was “simple and beautiful”, as he says. For a special reason: the captain of Biel was busy preparing for his upcoming wedding on June 9th. Even veteran Damien Brunner (37) didn’t find it that hard to leave this 1:7 behind: “In terms of emotions, it was even easier than after a narrowly lost game. This game just got completely out of hand.”
When the players arrived in the dressing room on Monday morning, they did not know what program awaited them. “We held a good team meeting and then did video analysis,” reveals Haas. The technical staff had also decided that no one would go on the ice. “They wanted us to have fun,” says Haas. Meanwhile, Zamboni talks about energy management.
Haas caused a sensation on Saturday. With a sharp live interview (“We shit our pants!”) with a red head on MySports in the second third break. After the Bielers were overrun by Geneva and fell behind 4-0. Haas recently added this to the acquisitions “Giovanni Trapattoni” (“Playing like a bottle is empty!”).
On this Monday afternoon, he calmly explains his sensational performance on camera: “It was the worst possible time of frustration after such a disaster third – then everything broke out of me. I didn’t want to think too much about giving the usual answers, just saying what was going through my mind.”
But maybe the captain’s incendiary speech did something. You can see that on Tuesday evening in final match 6 against Servette, the match of the last chance in Biel. “We are very happy, the hut will be full again. It will be the last game in this stadium for the Biel team in its current composition. We want to show our Biel hockey again, which has brought us this far,” said Zamboni. Which gives him hope: “We didn’t show our best hockey in the final.” Haas agrees, saying: “It’s a good sign and shows we still have something in us.”
Haas goes on to say: “We look forward to being able to show a reaction and a different face.” He does not believe that the Bielers have come to the end of their energy: “Both are tired at this point in the playoffs. It’s all about the head now.” And Brunner declares firmly: “Everyone knows where to use the lever. We’ll attack again on Tuesday!”
