Lugo says goodbye to 11 seasons in the Second League

Author: Alberto Lopez

Defeat to Málaga and Racing de Santander’s win against Granada confirm Lugo’s relegation to the First Federation after a poor performance

Lugo confirmed his failure yesterday. Mathematical descent to the First Federation after eleven seasons in the silver category. He needed Málaga to score and Racing Santander not to beat Granada to keep the thread of hope that separated him from the abyss. But nothing was achieved, and albivermellos will be active in the bronze category of Spanish football next season.

Íñigo Vélez’s team recorded another defeat against Málaga. The Andalusians needed barely two minutes to win. Rubén Castro and Villalba sealed the match before the break, Lugo looked for him, but nothing.

Duel of urgent needs. It was raining in Ángel Carro. Foreshadowing or not of what was to come, both teams had the affection of their fans. A large group of Málaga fans wanted to cheer on their team, five points from safety. After a few minutes of testing, Lugo tried to take the initiative in the game by trying to find the door in a combination way. However, the first danger option was thanks to a long ball that Avilés would try to finish without luck. Andalucia’s response was immediate, with Álex Feba’s cross from the left looking for Rubén Castro’s header. The mythical striker did not succeed either.

The tables were maintained at the traffic light. Málaga and its back five, like Lugo, decided to start the game from the back, which allowed the team from Lugo to advance the pressure. Those of Íñigo Vélez decided on the same option. In one of those plays, Clavería shot from the rim, but the ball went high. The tension was visible in both teams. There’s too much at stake. It took Málaga 16 minutes to get the first shot between three sticks. Of course, when he tried the first one, he felt comfortable. So much so that he managed to open the scoring after half an hour of play after Chavarría’s cross from the right side that Rubén Castro headed into the net and thus became the top scorer of the Second Division of all time. Such was the blow that Lugo received that, just two minutes later, a play from the left that Rubén Castro assisted for Villalba’s definition put the second on the scoreboard. A heavy blow for Lugo, who was practically kicked out.

There is no danger

After passing through the changing rooms, Málaga commanded the field. Controlling the game, taking the initiative and creating danger. Lugo endured. Resigned. Wanting to end the nightmare. Meanwhile, Málaga didn’t create any danger, but they didn’t suffer in defense either.

Íñigo Vélez took the risk of putting the striker, Manu Barreiro, as a central defender. They appeared willingly in the Málaga area, but it was harmless in attack and only Señé’s cross headed by Avilés alerted the Andalusians, in a quiet second half that allowed them to maintain the flame of consistency.

With possession evenly distributed, Lugo couldn’t create enough danger to get into the game. Although I tried. Avilés, his biggest asset at the attacking level, took possession of the ball in his own half, broke into the penalty area and despite the possibility of a cross, opted for a low cross that went wide.

Sergio Pellicer, aware of the importance of adding three points in the hope of salvation, moved the bench to rest his two best scorers: Rubén Castro and Villalba. In their place came Álex Gallar and Genaro, with the intention of giving consistency to the midfield. El Lugo did the same, and withdrew El Hacen and Carbó. Andoni’s cross at the far post, trying to generate a second play, allowed Avilés to head in for the final shot, but Manu Barreiro but failed to finish.

In the last minutes, Lugo players were completely unaware of the referee’s decisions. During that time, “Yes, we can!” was chanted from the stands. for his players. A desperate message for a powerless team, which had nothing going for it. It didn’t come out

No more miracles to hold on to. After more than a decade of fighting in the Second League, Lugo returns to the bronze category.
