It’s nice to watch the Swiss juniors at the World Championships in Basel. Marcel Jenni’s U18s impressed 3277 spectators in the 5:1 victory over Latvia with their physical effort, great willingness to run and some playful highlights.
The early 1-0 lead of the only 16-year-old striker Jamiro Reber is fantastic. After wonderful preparatory work by Gioele Pedrazzini, the son of ex-Langnau defender Jörg Reber nibbles at a defender and shoots ice cold.
After the team from the Baltic equalized with a majority, the Swiss took the lead again thanks to a shorthand from Leo Braillard. And just after the break, Lions striker Endo Meier, the son of Roger Meier (ex ZSC, champion with Kloten), made it 3-1.
The Swiss team’s fourth goal was again scored by a 16-year-old: defenseman Daniil Ustinkov, who played for ZSC in the NL playoffs, scored on the power play. Knipser Braillard also has the majority for the 5:1 endpoint.
With the second success after the 5-0 win over Norway, the Jenni team secured a ticket for Thursday’s quarter-finals for the final group game against the USA and thus achieved their official goal.
Anything after that would now be a bonus. Especially because Group A in Porrentruy, in which defending champion Sweden had swept Canada 8-0 off the ice at the start, is regarded as stronger. But the spirit of the young, hungry Swiss team will certainly not be lost when the quarter-finals are the last stop.
