GC will definitely throw Contini out

Since mid-March it was announced that ranking coach Giorgio Contini had left the team at the end of the season, the Hoppers are doing well: three wins from five games, the second best record of all ten Super League teams at this stage. After the 2:1 victory over the Schützenwiese in Winterthur, the lead on the Barrageplatz is eight points. The European cup ranks are much closer.

But: although things are going well, Contini will certainly not be a coach next season. Sports director Bernt Haas informed him of this on Friday.

The contracts of ten players are about to expire

Why is this worth mentioning? Because Contini left a back door open despite his firing. He wanted to wake up the club management because the planning for next season is not getting underway: more than ten player contracts are expiring. And the ownership structure is more open than ever after the latest developments: Earlier this week it came out that GC owner Jenny Wang is having interested buyers checked by a merchant bank.

Had the fog lifted, Contini could have envisioned a GC future. The 49-year-old is relaxed about being able to plan long vacations for June now. ‘It is now. And that there is clarity also has its good side,” Contini responds to his final dismissal – and adds with a grin: “If we lose the next five games, maybe I can go on vacation even earlier.”

“There is no such thing as a beauty prize”

Between the lines you can hear that Contini disagrees with what is happening with the record champions. But he is happy with the three points in Winterthur. Although the victory, despite the red card for Winti defender Diaby in the 22nd minute, is still a blow. “The most important thing is the three points. As far as I know, there are no extra points for a beauty prize in football,” said Contini.

His captain Amir Abrashi agrees: “Derby victories always taste sweet, no matter how they came about.” Unlike the coach, who only looks into the table in the rear-view mirror, Amir Abrashi now flirts with the European Cup qualification: “One eye is still looking back. But the other definitely forward.”
